PSHE Education (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. The belief in the unique dignity of the human person made in the image and likeness of God underpins our approach to PSHE and indeed to all learning at Holy Family.
In EYFS we follow the Think Equal Programme, a curriculum-based programme that support social and emotional development in the early years. It is rooted in mental health and social justice and aims to build a strong foundation for individual and societal progress. The 30-week programme is fully aligned with the early years foundation stage (EYFS) curriculum and teaches 25 skills and competencies to help children through their Early Childhood Education.
Think Equal helps our children at Holy Family learn, to:
Designed by global experts in the fields of education, human rights, neuroscience and psychology, the Think Equal programme is evidence-based, holistic, easy to use and impactful. It offers a narrative based approach and is delivered flexibly at Holy Family through a collection of picture books.
Our PSHE curriculum in Key Stage 1 and 2 follows the Jigsaw PSHE Programme. Jigsaw is a whole-school mindful approach and embodies a positive philosophy and creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings as well as building their capacity to learn.
We have reviewed the long term plans for PSHE to ensure it is taught inline with our Mission Statement and Catholic Ethos.
What is Jigsaw PSHE?
Jigsaw PSHE is a comprehensive and completely original scheme of work for the whole primary school. It brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development.
SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in the world.
Jigsaw contributes to the British Values agenda, both through the direct teaching of information and experiences provided. The five strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across the Jigsaw scheme.
Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year.
During Summer 2 we teach Relationship and Sex Education. We use A Journey in Love which is a Shrewsbury Diocese approved scheme.
